About Falmouth, Jamaica

cenotaph court house

Just completed a page about my town, Falmouth. A little about the past, present and future of this small, historic town. This was added to commemorate Emancipation Day, August 1st, which is 174 years since the abolition of slavery in Jamaica.

Today is Emancipation Day

August the 1st is Emancipation Day, a public holiday here in Jamaica to commemorate the abolition of slavery on August 1st, 1834. A long period of colonialism followed and we only gained Independence on August 6th, 1962. the arguments have been many as to whether we would have been better off if we were still a colony.

This morning, I awoke to the news that a brutal murder occurred 6 miles away in Bounty Hall, where a high school student (Holland High) was raped and stabbed to death. My friend was calling me to go to the murder scene but i declined. I couldn’t stand the sight of that little girl. How could anyone do this?!

Well, this will put a damper on today’s celebrations but it is no surprise. You get to expect anything living in Jamrock.
