What an eventful last few days it has been! Sitting at home on Thursday, waiting for Tropical Storm Gustav to pass over Jamaica only to have it pass late in the night while I was sleeping. It caused little or no damage in my area so all went well but I was hoping for something eventful to photograph. Anyway, it is better not having a photo opportunity in this case.

For President

The world has been watching the United States election process with interest. All indications are that worldwide popularity seems heavily in favor of Barak Obama. America has a love-hate relationship with the rest of the world largely because of its foreign policy. The world loves American opportunities for economic advancement, music, culture and sports. On the other hand, America is seen as a self-serving bully who beats up on whomever they consider weak, tells them what to do (or else) then only chooses to help those countries from which it can economically or strategically benefit. A proud, pompous “world dictator” that refuses to dialogue with countries they consider their enemies. If you don’t talk to your enemies, there is only one way to resolve your differences: WAR. The world is tired of this approach.

In comes Barak Obama with talk of an entirely different approach designed to create less wars, dialogue with countries with which the US has disagreements and improve the international reputation of America. The world welcomes this approach with open arms. If the world was voting, would Obama’s opponent, Republican John McCain be able to get 30% of the votes? I don’t think so….but the world is not voting: America is, so Obama has his hands full with McCain.

Republicans reading this may say: “stay out of our politics!” I’m sorry Mr. Republican, but whatever your country does, it affects the entire world, especially a small developing country a few hundred miles from you called Jamaica. Whenever things go good or bad in your country, it affects us directly.

  • When oil prices go up in America, the same happens here.
  • When your people have less spending power, they cannot vacation here, so we lose valuable tourism dollars (tourism is our number two foreign exchange earner).
  • When things get bad in America, Jamaicans living there remit much less money to Jamaica (remittances are our number one foreign exchange earner).
  • When you go to war, we worry about friends and relatives too. I have 4 relatives in your armed forces.
  • When your citizens lose their homes, they may be our family members (my father is one of those trying to hold on to his home).

I could go on and on, but the reality is, now more than ever, America and more so the world, is paying greater attention to this election.

Joe Biden

I watched the Democratic National Convention with interest and the most striking thing about it was the emotional factor. Speaker after speaker appealed to the softer side of America and the cameramen were busy showing people wiping tears as they listened to touching stories. The highlight of the conference was the “closure” of the Hilary Clinton campaign by her unreserved endorsement of Obama and her appeal for her die-hard supporters to follow suit. It will be left to be seen if that will be the case. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton (highly revered by Democrats) also gave an excellent speech endorsing Obama. Joe Biden’s acceptance speech (attacking friend and rival John McCain) was preceded by a touching introduction by his son. I didn’t see Barak’s speech as Tropical Storm Gustav’s passing Thursday night meant no cable service since then.

John McCain has countered beautifully with the appointment of a woman, Sarah Palin (44), Governor of Alaska as his Vice Presidential running mate. The Democrats are in for a fight! Many Democrats are peeved that Obama did not select Hilary Clinton as his running mate and a recent Gallup poll suggests that 28% of Clinton backers aim to vote for McCain. Add this to the pro-women voters who want to see women at the top in American politics and you see why a female running mate for McCain was not surprising.

The no-nonsense Palin made her name in part by backing tough ethical standards for politicians. She describes herself as a fighter against corruption and a bipartisan reformer but Democrats will use her lack of foreign policy experience against her.

On paper, Joe Biden (Democrat) seems to be the better VP candidate, but this campaign has been so emotional, the woman may just have the edge if emotions triumph over reason. This election can go either way, considering that a recent CNN poll taken on 23rd to 24th August suggests a statistical dead heat between Obama and MCcain at 47% each.

This is shaping up to be an intriguing, tactical contest heading for sudden death overtime. The person who makes the least mistake in these last days will become President of The United States of America.

Lately, I have been attempting to make some extra money online by filling out surveys. I have tried several sites including Greenfield and Survey Spot that promise big payouts, but almost always enter you into a draw for cash giveaway, which means you’re entering a lottery where few people will win….no guarantee of rewards.

I decided to try AWSurvey.com as the concept was much more attractive than the others. Instead of long drawn out surveys, you simply give a short evaluation of 2 websites at a time for a $4 payment. Membership is free and there is a $6 bonus just for joining. There is a referral programme that pays $1.25 for each person you refer that joins free. In my first session, I netted $27.

There is a great debate on the web as to whether this is a scam. Some people boast of getting paid promptly, some say they have problems getting paid, but almost every online survey with cash payout that I have seen, is treated with some suspicion.  This article gave me some encouragement and I thought, well, I didn’t pay anything for joining and my input is only my time, which would be spent unproductively on some social networking site anyway.

I will continue to try AWSurvey and give an update when it is time for payment.

With 10,708 athletes competing from 204 countries for 906 medals in 28 sports, two competitors will be propelled into immortality by their outstanding performance in Beijing 2008: Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps.

Phelps

Michael dominated the pool, breaking Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals set at the Munich Olympics in 1972, snatching 8; seven of them being World Records. This adds to the 6 he bagged in Athens in 2004 making him the closest human relative to a fish. :-D The 6 ft 4 inches, 195 pounds, 23 year old native of Baltimore Maryland, confessed to doing nothing but eating, sleeping and swimming.  To be swimming in 8 events is no mean feat as each has its rigorous rounds. To win all including a 7 World Records is truly super-human. He swam 17 times over 9 days breaking the record in 4 out of 5 individual events in which he participated. His 3 relay teams also set world records.

Phelps who started swimming at age 7, made his Olympic debut in Sydney at age 15 when he qualified for the 200m fly by finishing second at U.S. Trials, but despite his age and lack of international experience, he made the final in Sydney and finished fifth. Five months after that race, Phelps became the sport’s youngest male world-record holder when he claimed the 200m fly mark. Now we will speak of him with the same reverence as Mark Spitz.

Beijing Olympics: Usain Bolt Breaks The World Record (Men's 100 Meters)

Usain Bolt won three gold medals on the track, all in World Record times.  He won the 100 meters in 10.69, the 200 meters in 19.30 and ran the third leg on Jamaica’s 4×100 meters team that posted 37.10 seconds. Bolt will also be long remembered for his dancing and celebrations after winning the events, and people who don’t understand him have criticized him for everything from walking barefooted after the race, not shaking hands after the race, beating his chest after the race, lifting up his shirt, looking in the camera and saying “I am number one”, his mother running through the crowd to hug her son in the front row and sticking out his tongue are just a few that come to mind.

I have never heard a champion so criticized, yet his records will stand and we will soon forget the critics. The 21 year old from Coxheath, Sherwood Content in Trelawny has realized his true potential after winning the World Junior 200 meters title at 15 years old. What makes his performance more impressive is the fact that the 100 meters was never his race; he was originally a 200 and 400 meters runner and only ran a few competitive 100 meters races before this Olympic win.

There are other memorable results for me from Beijing 2008:

  1. The dominance of the Jamaican sprinters on the track.
  2. The brilliant performance of the British in hauling in 47 medals, including 19 golds, 13 silver  and 15 bronze coming from 9 golds, 9 silver and 12 bronze in 2004.
  3. The Chinese surprisingly winning the overall medal standings over the USA and Russia with 51 golds to the USA 36 and Russia 23.
  4. The Swedes having their worst Olympics since 1896, placing 56th in the medal table, winning only 4 silvers and a bronze down from 4 golds, two silver and a bronze in 2004.
  5. The Jamaican team placing 13th out of 204 countries with 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals up from 2 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronze in 2004.
  6. The depth of the USA in winning the most silver, 38 and the most bronze, 36 to go along with 36 gold medals, winning in the total medal count 110 to China’s 100.
  7. Jason Lezak posting the fastest relay split in history, 46.06, to catch Frenchman Alain Bernard for the win, by just .08 of a second in the 4×100 meters freestyle relay to keep Michael Phelp’s hopes of 8 gold medals alive.
  8. Rebecca Lyn Hammon from Rapid City, South Dakota, USA, playing for Russia against her native USA in women’s basketball.
  9. USA “Dream Team” re-claiming gold after losing in the last 2 Olympics.
  10. Argentina re-claiming gold by defeating Brazil 3-0 in semi-final and Nigeria 1-0 in the final of men’s soccer.
  11. The USA defeating Brazil in women’s soccer.
  12. The performance of the Chinese “baby” girls in gymnastics.
  13. The brilliant opening ceremony.
  14. South Korea upsetting Cuba for baseball gold.
  15. China sweeping the medals in table tennis (one of my favorite sports).
  16. Ethiopian and Kenyan dominance of the long distance athletics races.
  17. USA and Jamaica disastrous baton changes in sprint relays (USA in men and women’s 4×100 meters and Jamaica in women’s 4×100 meters).
  18. The poor performance of South Africa in bagging only one medal, a silver and placing 71st in the medal table.
  19. Matthew Mitcham of Australia winning the Men’s Platform, preventing a clean sweep of the diving medals by China.
  20. Chris Hoy of Great Britain winning 3 gold medals in cycling.

It has been a wonderful, memorable olympic games. There are many more great moments and everyone will have their favorites, but these are the ones that will stick with me. Now on to London 2012.

Equatorial Guinea on the map.

Equatorial Guinea on the map.

With a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of $50,200, the tiny oil rich West Central African country of Equatorial Guinea is the second richest in the world. Only Luxemburg, with a per capita income of $68,800 has a higher GDP per capita. Coming in third is the United Arab Emirates with $49,700.

The country has a population of 551,201 (July 2007 estimate) and lies between Cameroon and Gabon. The capital is Malabo.

Equatorial Guinea gained independence in 1968 after 190 years of Spanish rule. This tiny country, composed of a mainland portion plus five inhabited islands, is one of the smallest on the African continent. President OBIANG NGUEM MBASOGO has ruled the country for over two decades since seizing power from his uncle, then President MACIAS, in a 1979 coup.  Although nominally a constitutional democracy since 1991, the 1996 and 2002 presidential elections - as well as the 1999 legislative elections - were widely seen as being flawed. The president controls most opposition parties through the judicious use of patronage. Despite the country’s economic windfall from oil production resulting in a massive increase in government revenue in recent years, unfortunately, there have been few improvements in the country’s living standards. Source: aneki.com

So where is all this wealth? There should be some world development standard at the UN that requires countries to spend a certain percentage of Income on development. there should even be a ceiling on the percentage of revenue the big oil company can keep.

Malabo Oct 2001

This is a relatively sparsely populated country. With an area of 28,051 square km (10,831 square miles), the population density (July 2007 estimate) is 19.65 persons per square km or 50.89 persons per square mile (Jamaica is only 4,411 square miles with a population of less than 2.7 million!). Although they only get 12% of the oil revenue, there should be enough to go around for the small population. That high GDP per capita should be contributing to rapid development. The recent oil price increase should make them even richer! However, let’s give them a little time. Oil was only discovered there 14 years ago.

The gold medal winning, world record breaking run of Usain Bolt in the 200 meters men at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, China (19.30 seconds) further strengthened by the Olympic record breaking run of Melanie Walker in the 400 meters hurdles final (54.62), sparked off wild celebrations starting in Usain’s hometown of Sherwood Content, near Falmouth in Trelawny. There was a massive motorcade and partying throughout the day and night.

Productivity was at its lowest in history as almost everyone took to the streets in wild celebrations that end with a street dance in Sherwood. I was too tired to make it to Sherwood in the night but here are some photos taken during the day, The full photo set can be found here on my photo blog.
